Is There a Best Way to Go About Goal Setting?

Does goal setting work?

Goal setting can be very confusing and difficult for some people. With a little thought and breaking the task up into bite-sized pieces, it can become much easier and worthwhile. Before you begin, take an honest look at your life and what your goals are. Make sure that the goals you have in mind are in line with what you want and are in line with each other. Make sure your goals are your goals and not ones you think you should have – those imposed by family or peers.

You might confuse the situation by not being organized. Think about keeping separate goals for separate parts of your life. You may have family goals, career goals, and health goals. It will be easier to reach these goals  if you look at them individually instead of lumping them all together.

Some say try not to aim unrealistically high with your goal setting but don’t let yourself off too easy either. If you think your goal is impossible, it will be but if you think your goal is no big deal then, why work too hard too achieve it? And if you have a really big goal that you don’t believe you can achieve, learn how to change your thoughts. W. Clement Stone said: “Whatever The Mind Can Conceive… It Can Achieve.” He was referring, of course, to the Law of Attraction.

Once you are sure of your goals, make a list of what actions it will take to accomplish the goal and write a complete, detailed plan of how you are going to achieve it. Begin taking the actions required immediately and work on your goals and your plans to achieve them on a regular basis by updating and changing them to match your desires.

Now all of the above is really a good idea and not how I do it for myself at all. As in most things, it depends on what kind of person you are.  Goal setting is dependent upon your own uniqueness. My goals tend to be broader like, “I want to help many people by offering the things I’ve learned in my life to them using my gifts of intuition, communication and teaching.”

Then what I do about it may change but the goal stays always present.

My work with various life coaches and mentors has helped me realize what kind of goal setter I am.

I just went through the task of writing my goals for 2010. I put a lot of thought into it, but have been inspired by this excellent article to look them over and be more specific with the steps I will take and reclassify them (yes, I clumped them up as I thought about them.)

This article and Savina’s post has inspired me to also make a list of goals for 2010. I will make several broad goals and then break them down into monthly and weekly goals that I can accomplish. My new life adventure is very exciting and I am eager to map it out.
